intranet welcome news fieldwork projects team teaching publications contact welcome to the arnedo lab understanding the diversity and evolution of spiders and their allies interests the main motivation behind the lab's research is to understand the origins of biological diversity. our research focuses on inventorying biodiversity and unveiling the processes that shape temporal and spatial dynamics of life. we study biological evolution in a phylogenetic framework, boosting traditional natural history approaches with modern molecular tools to infer genealogical information, delimit species and accelerate biological inventories. we frequently conduct our research on isolated ecosystems (e.g. islands, caves, mountain tops), which provide test-tube like conditions for the study of evolution, and use spiders as the model organism. news workshop on calibration of molecular clocks using beast, barcelona april 20th, 2018 dr. guy baele of the rega institute evolutionary and computational virology section (belgium) taught an intensive, hands on workshop on"calibration of molecular clocks using the beast program" the workshop was organised by the zoosysevo research group at the faculty of biology of the universitat de barcelona and was attended by 30 postdocs, grad and undergrad students from several institutions in the barcelona area. lab retreat @ basque country, march 30th-april 1st, 2018 lab retreat at the basque country, great hike at the aiako-harria natural park and full cultural and gastronomic immersion at the cider house route (sagardotegia)! macrogen workshop @irbio, ub, february 23rd, 2018 macrogen spain organized a workshop to meet and discuss technical and logistic improvements of its sequencing service with the many users in the irbio. thanks, guys for the info, the support, and the breakfast! anual meeting of the nordic research school in biosystematics (forbio), tromso, norway, february 12-14, 2018 the lab heads north! plenary lecture by miquel arnedo on island evolution “replaying life’s tape: how species proliferate and diversify on islands". missed the northern lights, but enjoy the amazing talks and the warm atmosphere! thanks to maria capa, galina gusarova, and hugo de boer for the invitation! http://www.forbio.uio.no/events/meeting/2018/meeting2018.html the arnedo lab @ iv iberian congress of biological systematics, palma, martina pavlek and miquel arnedo...spiders (and other chelicerates) rule! see all news research projects recent and ongoing projects understanding the role of environmental and climatic changes in shaping subterranean diversity to preserve europe’s unique hidden biodiversity climate warming and other anthropogenic perturbations are affecting ecosystems worldwide, contributing to the sixth mass extinction. documenting and explaining a vanishing biodiversity are major challenges in evolutionary and ecological research, but understanding biodiversity is an essential step towards halting its loss and the degradation of ecosystem services, a headline target of eu 2020 biodiversity strategy. caves are isolated and extreme habitats that, like oceanic islands, offer unparalleled opportunities for biodiversity research. subterranean ecosystems are simpler than surface ones. their stable climatic conditions, scarcity of food and absence of light drive the evolution of highly adapted fauna. because of the difficulty to access and explore caves and the rarity of cave dwelling organisms, the study of the subterranean realm has lagged behind the research conducted in other experimental ecosystems. despite of their reputedly stable climatic conditions, recent studies show that global warming may impact subterranean habitats by rising temperatures and, consequently, threatening troglobionts, which have low tolerance to temperature variations, causing the reduction of optimal habitat and driving narrowly distributed species to extinction. hiddenlife project aims to improve our understanding of one of the top biodiversity hotspots in europe–the dinarides, and its unique cave fauna, to ensure its conservation and future well-being. through a multidisciplinary approach that combines state of the art molecular and statistical tools, i will investigate the systematics, phylogeography, and environmental preferences of three independent lineages of cave spiders. this will contribute to untangling the mechanisms that shaped their origin and present day diversity and distribution. by projecting potential distributions under predicted scenarios of global warming, i will predict future habitat suitability and assess vulnerability of this unique and fragile fauna testing adaptive radiation and speciation mechanisms in the highly diverse spider genus dysdera: the island lineages this project aims at gaining a better understanding of the origins of biological diversity and its dynamics in time and space by using a species-rich spider group as a model system. the project seeks to bring together and consolidate a high-quality research program in systematics and evolutionary biology that addresses fundamental questions in biology: how many species are there out there? how, where and when did they originate and diversify? what are the key drivers of diversification? understanding what causes speciation and phenotypic change requires a multidisciplinary approach that integrates fieldwork, modern morphological techniques, genomic tools and species distribution modelling. playing the tape twice: parallel colonization and diversification of laminacauda spiders in the south pacific and south atlantic archipelagoes of juan fernandez and tristan da cuhna this project addresses the biogeography, species diversity and speciation of two closely related groups of linyphiidae spiders (“money or dwarf spiders”) in two isolated volcanic archipelagoes located at similar latitude in the pacific and atlantic oceans (juan fernandez and tristan da cuhna, respectively). the project will provide two separate and independent windows in time and space into the evolutionary pathways of long distance dispersal and local diversification of oceanic archipelagoes. most of the closest relatives of the juan fernandez species can be found in the valdivian temperate rainforests of continental south america. the native biota of tristan da cuhna is primarily of temperate south american origin.with modern dna based taxonomic techniques to gain a better understanding of the diversity of spiders in the iberian peninsula and their biogeographic and evolutionary patterns. dna barcoding uses standardized 500- to 800-bp sequences to accelerate and automatize species identification. in addition, dnabarcodes help to reveal biogeographic history and refine species distributions by providing information on phylogenetic relationships and population structures and allowing identification of immature stages. spiders are among the most diverse and ubiquitous organisms on earth, are easy to sample and play an important role in shaping arthropod communities as the dominant predators in most terrestrial ecosystems. reconciling semi-quantitative bioinventoring with dna barcoding to infer diversity and biogeographical patterns in the spanish national parks network national parks play a key role in preserving representative natural landscapes for future generations. understanding the spatial patterns of biodiversity and their underlying processes is a fundamental task for conservation biology. this is specially relevant for top predators, which rather than being a simple “aesthetic” component to conserve, have been recently demonstrated to be: 1) the most sensitive trophic level to environmental changes, and 2) highly relevant for ecosystem functioning, being their extinction a cause for extremely important changes
